Maia,Valéria Cid; Wilson,Vinícius Abexander Condé; Monteiro,Ricardo Ferreira.
ABSTRACT A new species of Machaeriobia Rübsaamen, 1915 (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) from Brazil. Machaeriobia Rübsaamen, 1915 is a Neotropical genus, until now known from a single species, M. machaerii (Kieffer, 1913), described from Brazil (State of Santa Catarina). That species induces spherical leaf galls on Machaerium sp. (Fabaceae) and its geographical distribution is still restricted to the type-locality. A new galling species, Machaeriobia gemmae, associated with Machaerium macaense (Fabaceae), is described and illustrated (larva, pupa, male, and female) based on material collected in the Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The new species is unique for its one or two-segmented palpi, deeply notched aedeagus, pupa with...

Dolichophaonia gallicola (Albuq.) (Diptera: Muscidae): espécie cecidógena ou inquilina? Anais da SEB
Monteiro,Ricardo F.; Oda,Rubens A.M..
Zalepidota piperis Rubs. (Diptera Cecidomyiidae) is a stem-gall former on Piper arboreum Aub. (Piperaceae) which occurs during spring in Rio de Janeiro Atlantic Forest. Eight inquilin species and four parasitoid species were also obtained from this gall. Dolichophaonia gallicola (Albuq.) (Diptera: Muscidae) larvae were frequently found inside the gall as inquilin species. The uncommon cecidogenous habit of this muscid species on Pteridium aquilinum Kunth (Pteridophyta), as recorded in the literature, is discussed.

Galling arthropod diversity in adjacent swamp forests and restinga vegetation in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Mendonça Jr,Milton De S; Piccardi,Hosana M F; Jahnke,Simone M; Dalbem,Ricardo V.
Galling arthropods create plant structures inside which they find shelter. Factors acting on galler diversity are still being discussed, with this fauna considered more diverse in xeric than mesic environments (higrothermic stress hypothesis, HSH), and also in more plant diverse sites. Here we compare galler abundance (N), equitability (E), species richness (S) and composition between adjacent restinga (xeric) and swamp forests (mesic) in Parque Estadual de Itapeva (29°21' S, 49°45' W), Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Five trails, two in swamp forest and three in restingas, were sampled four times each (January/December 2005). After an effort of 60h/person, 621 galled plant individuals belonging to 104 gall morphotypes were recorded. This suggests a...

New taxa, including three new genera show uniqueness of Neotropical Nepticulidae (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Doorenweerd, C.; Nishida, K.; Snyers, C..
After finding distinct clades in a molecular phylogeny for Nepticulidae that could not be placed in any known genera and discovering clear apomorphic characters that define these clades, as well as a number of Neotropical species that could be placed in known genera but were undescribed, three new genera and nine new species are here described from the Neotropics: Stigmella gallicola van Nieukerken & Nishida, sp. n. reared from galls on Hampea appendiculata (Malvaceae) in Costa Rica, representing the first example of a gall making Stigmella; S. schinivora van Nieukerken, sp. n. reared from leafmines on Schinus terebinthifolia (Anacardiaceae) in Argentina, Misiones; S. costaricensis van Nieukerken & Nishida, sp. n. and S. intronia van Nieukerken...

Phytotoxicity of the extracts of Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus Hassl. (Fabaceae) leaflets and galls on seed germination and early development of lettuce Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Denis Coelho de; Soares,Geraldo Luiz Gonçalves; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos.
Galls induced by Euphalerus ostreoides (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) cause structural and chemical alterations on Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus leaflets. Healthy and galled leaflet tissues of this plant species are rich in secondary metabolites with potential allelopathic effects. This research compares the allelopathic effects of the aqueous extracts of L. muehlbergianus leaflets and galls on seeds and seedlings of Lactuta sativa, and evaluates the chemical impact produced by a gall-inducing insect on the other trophic levels associated with it. The extracts were obtained through static maceration in distilled water (5% p/v). The treatments consisted of aqueous crude extracts and those previously filtered in polyvinylpirrolidone (PVP). After seven days, seedling...

Plant diversity and galling arthropod diversity searching for taxonomic patterns in an animal-plant interaction in the Neotropics Boletín de la Sociedad
de Souza Mendonça, Jr.,Milton.
Gall-inducers are a special guild of endophytic herbivores generating distinct structures known as galls. Gallers are species-specific, as the galls they induce: each gall morphotype is unique. The relationship between plants and gallers is close, and some of the hypotheses to explain galling diversity consider plants directly; others do not. Here I review current diversity hypotheses on galls and their hosts, adding ideas on the interpretation of galler host plant data. The example comes from an ongoing standardised inventory of galls and hosts in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, southern Brazil. The questions addressed here are whether: a) galls occur consistently on some plant taxa in different areas, b) these taxa are important for vegetation composition,...

REPRESENTATIVITY OF THE GENUS ASPHONDYLIA LOEW, 1850 (DIPTERA, CECIDOMYIIDAE) IN BRAZIL Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
FLOR,ISMAEL CIVIDINI; MAIA,VALÉRIA CID.
ABSTRACT Representativity of the genus Asphondylia Loew, 1850 (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) in Brazil. This cosmopolitan genus includes 272 galling species described, of which about 100 occur in the Neotropical Region. The present study goal to evaluate the richness of Asphondylia in Brazil, to provide an updated list of the host plant species, to determine the plant organs where galls are induced, to update the geographic distribution of the genus, to verify it distribution in the Brazilian biomes, and to the list the associated fauna. The survey data was carried out by consulting the Cecidomyiidae collection of the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, the database “Web of Science” using Asphondylia and Brasil/Brazil as keywords, 51 Brazilian inventories and two catalogues....
